RCB needs Psychological Reconditioning

RCB Disappointment in IPLGame after game I watch with disbelief, RCB lose its matches in the present edition of the IPL – that has pushed the side to the last spot. I wonder – ` Is there an end to this royal team’ misery?  

RCB on paper always looked like winning the IPL title hands down- but that was not to be- it has never won the cup. The closest they have come was the 3 finals they made in 2009, 2011, & 2016.

Why have the RCB not able to live up to their reputation? Let’s analyse:

  • Batting has always been RCB’s strength with stalwarts like Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle & AB De Villiers in its wings. The latest addition being Shane Watson. RCB’s fortunes have always been dependant on the success of this quartet and whenever one or two of them clicked RCB has done well. This makes the team top heavy without the wanted balance in its batting composition.


  • The RCB selection committee has invested a large chunk of their budget on the likes of Gayle, Kohli et al and with the remaining meagre budget available they compromise and end up buying mediocre players [especially bowlers]. So the fine balance is lost.RCB Images 2
  • Bowling has never been RCB’s forte – time and again they have failed to restrict the onslaught of the opposition batsman and at times when they were given respectable totals they have not been able to defend it.


  • Players have been known to perform well after they were bought from RCB – and why they didn’t perform well with their earlier franchisee [especially the bowlers] is one question that the chief mentor and the bowling coach should answer.


  • The aura of some of the players in the RCB ranks is so great that it over shadow’s the performances of other players making it difficult to bask in their own glory. It is the duty of the support staff to make them more comfortable.

There is a dire need for a sports psychologist in the RCB team for these simple reasons:

1.This IPL X season the famous quartet of Kohli, Gayle, AB De and Shane Watson has not delivered. Injuries or otherwise they have been dubbed to be out of form. Remember it can happen to the best in this world and they are all humans. A psychologist in its ranks would have lent them the psychological support to tide over the situation.

2. The team’s think tank on many occasions has admitted that- they have worked very hard in the nets and tried everything. Trying too hard, over thinking and analysing will only lead to – paralysis by analysis. The resultant effect is pressure, stress and decrement in performance. The presence of a sports psychologist would have helped

3. Most teams of the IPL comprise of senior and junior players. Often the junior players are left cooling their heels not sure whether they will have a role to play. The team management has to take them in to their confidence and prepare them mentally to contribute big time when the situation arose. They need to be assured that their contribution is important to the success of the team. Paddy Upton, Rahul Dravid, Shane Warne, and Shane Watson did it successfully with the Rajasthan Royals. The well-known sports psychologist Dr Rudi Webster did it for the KKR in 2012. Who will forget the cameo effort of Manvinder Bisla against the CSk that helped win the tournament?

4. The support staffs of the RCB headed by chief mentor Daniel Vettori does not seem effective enough to fill this role. A sports psychologist in the ranks of the RCB would have done wonders to its fortunes.

When the body feels good, confidence follows


A strong mind and weak body or a weak mind in a strong body cannot co-exist. The brain and the brawn have a strong interdependence.

In any sporting action though the skill is learned and stored in the brain, it has to be executed by the body, so the body needs to be looked after.

Elite athletes have often said when they were physically well prepared and their bodies felt good, they felt more confident and they were hopeful of a better outcome.

But, there is a limit to the extent one can stretch your body: when you overdo, it breaks down. I remember cricketing icon, Sachin Tendulkar, having a few problems with his body [tennis elbow et al], so did the Golf’s great Tiger Woods as he has suffered injuries to his back and knees. There have been instances of top-class performers breaking down due to injury and later going under the knife.

This is quite common, with the recent addition to this list being Saina Nehwal, Rohit Sharma and Jimmy Anderson. The English cricketer played in 122 test matches, a phenomenal record for any fast bowler in the modern era of non-stop cricket.

Physical fitness

One attributable factor by which athletes all over the world in different sports have taken their game to higher levels is through physical fitness. Physical fitness is also the reason why athletes have been able to extend their careers beyond the age of 35.

To be on top of your game and be able to survive the cutting-edge competition of modern day sports, one needs to be physically fit. Athletes these days have been breaking barriers and have crossed boundaries in terms of physical possibilities, thanks to their physical conditioning.

Virat Kohli – Indian cricket captain and star performer is one such shining example. A fitness freak, he maintains an unmatchable work ethic and an ultra disciplined life. He says “ I have worked on my fitness over the years: I feel I can go on for longer periods: I don’t get tired that quickly as I used to before.’’ [Reference: Deccan Herald- 12/Feb/ 17].

Jose Maria Olazabal, a golfer from Spain, who has won 6 PGA tour titles and 23 European titles in his career, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2009. His career was cut short temporarily by a crippling arthritic disease – a condition in which he was not able walk or even comb his hair, let alone wield the club. But, 2017 has seen him come back into the golfing circuit and doing well. [DH 12/2/17].

In pursuit of excellence, one may stretch the limits of their bodies and be vulnerable to physical injuries. This has happened to many athletes in the past – while some have been able to bounce back from injuries, others have not.

The best examples that come to mind are Kapil Dev and Richard Hadlee, both great exponents of swing bowling. They said they preferred to stay supple and worked more at their bowling and less at the gym. Jimmy Anderson is another example. Many athletes say the secret is in building more muscles that can help in more stamina, endurance and power. But being over worked and tense can also break very quickly.

This debate goes on and athletes will stretch and abuse their bodies beyond limits in their quest for greatness. This is an inevitable evil in today’s competitive world of sports.

What is the midpath then? What is the right balance? These are intriguing questions in today’s sport.

The answer is to know your body and listen to it. Your body is always trying to tell you something like the gauges on the instrument panel of your car would do.

It is for you to read the signs what your body is trying to tell you. When it comes to human nature we say everybody is different, likewise every body is different from the rest.

Psychologically speaking, uncontrolled stress levels is unhealthy for the body as it causes injuries. So, be mindful of your stress management and stay relaxed. Know your body and love your body!

Swagger and confidence makes for a winning character

Vivan richards and Virat Kohli

The very sight of Vivian Richards walking up to bat, chewing a gum and swaying his big square chest sent a chill down the spine of  bowlers all over the world.

Dennis Lillee with his trademark head band and drooping moustache was an intimidating sight even for batsman of the caliber of Sunny Gavaskar, Viv Richards or an Ian Botham.

The swagger of the beefy guys like Botham, Mathew Hayden was a sight to behold.

These days I like the swagger of golfer, Dustin Johnson, as he strides from one hole to the next. He has confidence written all over him as he displays a strong sense of self-belief that helped him win two majors last year. You won’t be surprised if his female followers drool over him saying `what a man! The broad chested Chris Gayle falls in this company.

I would like to add to this illustrious list, the names of Andrew Flintoff, Shane Warne, Virat Kohli, Kapil Dev, AB de Villiers, Rafa Nadal, Usain Bolt, Tiger Woods, golfer Arnold Palmer, Michael Jordan & Mohamed Ali. And not to forget the queen of tennis, the Iron willed lady- Serena Williams.

What is common between all of them and why would you put them all in one big golden basket of fame? They are all strong characters and possessed some common qualities like:-

  1.  A confident swagger as they move in the sporting arena.
  2. They show off self-confidence with lots and lots of self-belief oozing out.
  3. They look aggressive – but their aggression is positive and not destructive.
  4. They have the killer instinct that seems to say- `I am the best, I will finish you!’
  5. They are not overawed by their opponents; instead they put their opponents under `awe’.
  6. They seem to inspire millions on their own and create a huge fan following wherever they go.

Cricketer Virat Kohli is the heartthrob of millions in India and an Indian Idol, for sure. He symbolizes the youth force in India and is an inspiration to them.

He is such a true character that he has already lead India to many victories and most of his centuries have come after he has taken over India’s captaincy. He has passed the true test of character. Who wouldn’t want to emulate, Viraat-the-samrat.
